How to Make the Most of College Fairs and Information Sessions

College fairs and information sessions are excellent opportunities for students to learn more about potential schools, connect with admissions representatives, and demonstrate interest. However, to make the most of these events, you’ll need to proceed with a plan! Here’s how to prepare, ask the right questions, and follow up to leave a lasting impression.

1. Prepare Before You Go

Research the Colleges Attending

Before attending a college fair, find out which schools will be represented. Create a list of colleges you’re interested in, and do some basic research on each one. Understanding a school’s programs, culture, and admission requirements will help you ask more informed questions and have more meaningful conversations.

Bring a Notebook and Pen

You’ll want to jot down important information and take notes during your conversations with admissions representatives. This will help you remember key details and make it easier to follow up later.

Create a List of Questions

Prepare a few thoughtful questions to ask each representative. This shows that you’ve done your homework and are genuinely interested in their school. Here are some examples:

    • What kind of student thrives at your college?
    • Can you tell me about research opportunities for undergraduates?
    • What internships or career support does your school offer?

Bring Your Resume (Optional)

If you’re a junior or senior, consider bringing a few copies of your resume. This isn’t necessary, but it can be a good way to share your accomplishments and let the representative get to know you better.

2. Be Engaged and Make a Positive Impression

Introduce Yourself Confidently

Approach each admissions representative with a smile, make eye contact, and introduce yourself. Share your name, year in school, and a brief statement about your interests. This can help start the conversation and make you more memorable.

Ask Insightful Questions

Avoid questions that can be easily answered by looking at the school’s website (e.g., “What’s the average SAT score?”). Instead, ask questions that show you’re thinking deeply about what you want in a college experience. For example:

    • How does your college support first-year students during the transition to college life?
    • Can you share a unique tradition or aspect of your campus culture?

Take Notes During the Conversation

Write down important points or anything that particularly resonates with you. This will help you remember details when you’re writing essays or following up with the school.

3. Network and Build Relationships

Collect Contact Information

Ask admissions representatives for their business cards or contact details. If they don’t have cards, make a note of their name and email address. Building a relationship with these representatives can give you an edge in the admissions process.

Engage With Other Students

College fairs and information sessions can also be a chance to network with other students. You might learn something from their questions or connect with someone who shares similar college interests.

4. Follow Up After the Event

Send a “Thank You” Email

Within a day or two of the event, send a polite and thoughtful email to the representatives you spoke with. Thank them for their time, mention a detail from your conversation, and express your continued interest in the school. This shows maturity and reinforces your enthusiasm for the college. For example:

Dear [Representative’s Name], Thank you for taking the time to speak with me at the [Event Name]. I enjoyed learning about [specific detail], and it made me even more excited about applying to [College Name]. I look forward to staying in touch!

Keep a Record of Your Interactions

Maintain a list of schools you spoke with, the representatives’ names, and any important details you discussed. This will be useful when writing application essays, scheduling interviews, or planning future campus visits.

Bottom Line

College fairs and information sessions are valuable opportunities to learn about schools, ask questions, and make connections. By preparing in advance, engaging meaningfully with representatives, and following up afterward, you can demonstrate your interest and set yourself apart as a proactive, thoughtful applicant.
